2015 (In Poland)
My parents emigrated from in the 1980’s during the period of Soviet communist dominance—my mother found residence in a refugee camp in Italy while my father found work in Austria. After receiving Visa’s to the United States they met each other in Hamtramck, Michigan, a popular destination for Polish immigrants at the time. As a child I was raised speaking Polish at home and practiced the traditions, but as time passed a separation between two generations began to form. I traveled to Poland for two months, met family members I had only seen in photographs and relearned my first language.
